Apparently, back in the day people used to think that staircases would function as additional support for the second floor and therefore they didn’t need support beams there. Here’s the thing: that’s not how stairs work.
Consequently the wall under it is sagging by a tiny bit, so now they have to install an additional support beam there without disrupting the floor plans. Once they do that, we should be in good shape.
